A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a progressive web application that behaves like a mobile app but runs in the browser. It can be added to a phone’s home screen, works offline, and can send notifications. It combines the reach of the web with the convenience of a native app.
How a PWA works
At its core a PWA is a website built with modern technologies that uses a so-called service worker. It runs in the background, caches parts of the app in the device’s memory, and thanks to this a PWA can work even with a weak connection or none at all. The user adds the app to the home screen straight from the browser, with no download from a store.
Once added to the home screen, a PWA opens in its own window without the browser bar, so it feels like a regular app. It can work with notifications, and after loading it feels fast because some content is stored locally.
Why consider a PWA
The main advantage is reach and cost. You build a PWA once and it runs on Android, iPhone, and desktop. There is no need to develop separate versions for each platform, nor an app-store approval process. On top of that, the user doesn’t have to install anything; a link is enough.
