Computing power on demand

The cloud means delivering computing power, storage, and software over the internet on demand, instead of running your own servers in-house. You rent capacity from a provider and pay for what you actually use. This lets you scale up or down flexibly without a large upfront investment in hardware.

How the cloud works

Providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud run vast data centers with thousands of servers. Over the internet you rent exactly as much power, storage, or ready-made services as you need, while the provider takes care of the hardware itself, its maintenance, and its security.

The cloud comes in several layers. Infrastructure (IaaS) gives you bare servers and storage, a platform (PaaS) adds a ready environment to run applications, and software as a service (SaaS) is finished applications available through the browser. The higher the layer, the less you manage the technology yourself.

Why companies move to the cloud

The main benefit is flexibility. You raise capacity when demand grows — for example during a seasonal peak in an online store — and lower it again afterwards, so you do not pay for power you are not using. The large upfront investment in your own servers disappears.

The cloud also improves reliability and availability. Data is backed up across several locations, and reputable providers offer security a smaller company could hardly build on its own. The application is reachable from anywhere, which makes remote work easier too.

Is data in the cloud secure?

Reputable providers invest far more in security than a typical company and back data up across several locations. Security still depends on configuring access correctly on your side, though — this is where working with an expert pays off.

Is the cloud cheaper than owning servers?

It depends on the load. For variable or growing traffic the cloud is usually more cost-effective, because you pay only for what you use and do not buy hardware upfront. For steady, heavy load it is worth running the numbers.

Where is my data physically stored in the cloud?

In most cases you can choose the data-center region, for example within the EU. That matters both for speed and for compliance with data-protection rules.
