Omnichannel

Connected sales channels

Omnichannel is an approach in which a company connects all its sales and communication channels, meaning the online store, the physical shop, the phone, and social media, into one seamless experience. The customer can move between channels without interruption and gets the same information, prices, and level of service everywhere.

How omnichannel works

The essence of omnichannel is that channels don’t operate separately but share common data about products, stock, and customers. The customer can view a product online, pick it up in the shop, and handle a complaint by phone without having to repeat information. Each channel knows what happened in the others.

For this to work, the systems have to be connected. A central record of stock and customers plays the key role, often built around a CRM system that keeps the customer’s history in one place and makes it available to every channel.

Omnichannel versus multichannel

People often confuse these two terms, but there’s a fundamental difference. Multichannel means a company sells across several channels that nonetheless operate on their own and don’t know about each other. Omnichannel connects those channels and puts the customer, not the individual channel, at the center.

  • Multichannel: several channels that operate separately.
  • Omnichannel: the same channels connected to one another.
  • Multichannel: customer data is fragmented.
  • Omnichannel: a unified customer history across channels.

What benefits omnichannel brings

For the customer, omnichannel means convenience and consistency: they buy where it suits them and don’t have to repeat anything. For the company, it means higher satisfaction, better customer loyalty, and a more accurate view of sales, because data from the channels merges into a single picture.

Omnichannel also increases revenue. A customer who interacts with you across several connected channels tends to be more loyal and spends more with you on average. Only the initial integration of systems is more demanding, but it pays off in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between omnichannel and multichannel?

Multichannel means selling across several channels that operate on their own. Omnichannel connects those channels so they follow on from one another and the customer moves between them seamlessly, keeping their history and context.

Does a small store need omnichannel?

Even a smaller business benefits from connecting its store with other channels, such as social media and customer support. You don’t have to start with everything at once; what matters is that the channels you use share data with each other.

What is the foundation of working omnichannel?

Unified data about products, stock, and customers available to every channel. Without connected systems, often built around a CRM and central stock, omnichannel stays just a buzzword with no real benefit.
