Lead

A potential customer

A lead is a potential customer who has shown interest in your products or services, for example by filling in a form, sending an inquiry, or downloading a resource. They have not bought yet but have made themselves known. The goal of sales is to capture leads, qualify them, and gradually turn them into customers.

How a lead arises

A lead arises the moment someone takes a step that signals interest and leaves their contact details. It can be filling in an inquiry form, a phone call, a message on social media, a newsletter sign-up, or downloading a price list or e-book. What they share is that an anonymous visitor becomes a specific contact.

Not every lead is equally close to buying. One is just gathering information, another has a budget and wants a quote today. That is why leads are qualified, sorted by how real and ready to buy they are, so the salesperson spends time on the most promising ones.

Why leads matter

Leads are the fuel of sales. Without a fresh inflow of contacts, the sales team has no one to work with and revenue stalls. The key, though, is not just to get leads but to work with them quickly and systematically, otherwise they go cold and move to a competitor.

  • Fast response: the sooner you reach a lead, the higher the chance of a deal.
  • Logging in a CRM so no inquiry slips through.
  • Qualification: telling which lead is ready to buy.
  • Steady follow-up until the lead decides.

A lead and the path to a customer

A lead is one of the first steps of the sales funnel. It gradually moves through interest, the offer, and the decision to the purchase, when it becomes a customer. The better you capture this flow in a custom CRM, the fewer opportunities you lose along the way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a lead and a customer?

A lead is a contact who has shown interest but has not bought yet. A customer is someone who has already completed a purchase. The job of sales and marketing is to help the lead move all the way to an order.

What does a qualified lead mean?

It is a lead that meets the marks of a real prospect: they have a need, a budget, and often a timeframe. These are the contacts worth focusing your sales energy on, because the chance of closing is higher.

How do you keep track of leads?

Most reliably through a CRM, where each lead has its own record, communication history, and next step. That way an inquiry doesn’t get buried in emails or left hanging without a response.
